Simple and Easy Idea
Wish I could take credit for this idea but it goes to Padma. At the parapros conference I attended earlier this year one of the workshops I attended was on Diversity. Padma's idea was to make sure when you put up book displays to make sure the faces are cover a broad spectrum. Most of my displays are in the children's area so remembering to make sure to put books representing different cultures, ages and abilities has added a lot to the appeal of my displays.

I really liked your comment. I went through CW’s picture book collection last February and put “Multi-cultural” stickers on the appropriate books. Then, during our district-wide Multi-cultural month (I think it was March) I was able to quickly pull those picture books and put them on a special display. Most of those books rarely checked out previous to this special attention. I think I’ll do it again this coming year. I will look for a variety of faces to display.
One of my favorite crafts for multi-cultural awareness story times was a “unity wreath”. I had volunteers cut out the brightly colored hands (child sized) that I had already photocopied. Each child got about 8 different colored hands to glue onto a colored sheet of paper in the shape of a wreath (or any shape they wanted). Then they put glue and glitter on the hands and paper to add a touch of bling. I have kept these projects (some of the kids let me keep them) for several years and use them as part of my annual display.
